Chapter 16 - Fernand Legros and Réal Lessard, The Lucrative World of Art Forgery. (You read that correctly too)

Fernand Legros and Réal Lessard

I first met Fernand and Réal when I was at the Lycée Jaquard in Ouchy near Lausanne in Switzerland. It was 1961 and they came with the mother of one of my school friends, to a play rehearsal we were doing. The boy's name was something like Urlrich but I can't really be sure. When the Lycée moved up to their winter school at Crans-Montana, I saw Fernand there as well.

It was in Crans-Montana that I took my skiing to another level and got on the school ski-team. We now live near a big ski mountain and I have twice skied from the summit (9,500ft/2,876m)!

When I told Fernand that I would be in Cannes that summer we agreed to meet, which we did. We had some great times and they came up to our villa in Super Cannes a few times.

The photo on the top of the page is Fernand and me at the villa and the photo on the left is Fernand Legros and a young Real Lessard. My father invited them out to our small but very comfortable yacht and we went out to the islands off Cannes and Juan-les-Pins for a picnic lunch. Mum and Dad, my girlfriend Judy and I, and of course Fernand and Réal. Fernand then invited us out for dinner. Réal had a Ferrari Dino and took my girlfriend and me out for a ride in it. I thought he was after her but little did I know the Fernand and Réal were gay! Since that day I yearned to own a Ferrari and my dream came true many years later. We knew he was an art dealer but no more than that. It was a great holiday and then the summer ended, a new job in Manchester awaited me and we parted company.

Several years later I was glancing through the magazine "Esquire" and was shocked to see an article titled "The lucrative world of art forgery" and it was about Fernand and Réal who had sold $500,000 of fake paintings to the multi-millionaire ****** Meadows. The paintings were done by a Hungarian man called Elmyr de Hory. There is an excellent book about Elmyr de Hory written by Mark Forgy called The Forger's Apprentice, who was with him for several years. I highly recommend it.

These three men, Fernand Legros, Réal, Lessard and Elmyr de Hory, were to the art forging business: La creme de la creme by a long, long way.

Fernand died of throat cancer in 1983 but Réal is still painting in Brussels. He too can paint in the style of Picasso and his contemporaries. Maybe I'll try to see if he remembers that summer in Cannes in 1962.

Sometimes you meet people in your life and...

The whole story is fascinating. If you have the time Google any of the three: Fernand Legros, Réal, Lessard or Elmyr de Hory.

F for Fake

Elmyr de Hory: an elegant Jewish aristocrat whom World War II had stripped of everything but his genius at imitating Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Renoir, and other great painters of the 20th century. Fernand Legros: a ruthless Egyptian who decreed that museums, art galleries and millionaire collectors should finance his love of luxury and pretty boys. And Real Lessard: an Adonis-like Canadian youth who began as Fernand’s protegé and in the end out-dueled the master in cunning. Read more..
